On December 27, 1858, Griffith Island Lighthouse became the third of the six Imperial Towers to be formally placed in operation, exhibiting a fixed white light from a third-order Fresnel lens at a focal plane of 130 feet above the bay. On September 22, 1937, the Cat Island Lighthouse was discontinued due to the greatly diminishing number of vessels using the Sound. Word was sent out from the Coast Guard Headquarters that the Federal government had placed the Cat Island Lighthouse for sale by sealed bid. The structure continued to remain sitting idle and abandoned.
